It's 'War of the roses' as towns go on scent of Ulster in Bloom title!! Its all coming up roses in Dungannon and Cookstown..and the two towns are looking all the better for it!! Locals and visitors alike have been admiring the wonderful and beautiful floral displays currently on show in both towns over the summer. The colourful floral spectacles are the work of dedicated council staff. The two councils have entered their floral displays in this year's Translink Ulster in Bloom awards, the results of which will be announced on Thursday 2nd September and both are no strangers to the awards, having been previous winners. The Courier has been digging into the excellent work of both Councils and has 'unearthed' some interesting facts about the towns' flower shows.... The Technical Services Department of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council have always sought to promote and raise the profile of the Borough through its high environmental standards and floral displays. Troughs, hanging baskets, floral beds etc which are strategically located throughout the town centre, have been planted out in creative and colourful displays. The Department is very proud of its own in-house grounds, maintenance team who are knowledgeable and experienced in bringing such "bloom" to the Borough. Dungannon Council has been pleased to re-introduce the iconic floral butterfly displays at the Hospital roundabout. These floral displays are unique to Dungannon town and form an important feature of the overall environmental enhancement of the town centre. It is worth noting that the butterfly displays were recently used as a backdrop for wedding photography. Each year Dungannon Borough Council is approached by various external agencies and charitable organisations to have their logos/emblems planted out in flowers at Stangmore Embankment. This high profile site on a main arterial route leading into Dungannon town provides and ideal setting for the community and voluntary sector to raise awareness of their respective organisations. This year, in partnership with Dungannon Choral Society, a floral bed was designed celebrating their 75th anniversary. Dungannon town has been entered in the 2010 Ulster in Bloom Competition. The Council is hoping that their efforts and hard work in delivering and maintaining the floral displays will be justly rewarded. Commenting on the floral displays, the Director of technical Services, Bertie McMinn MBE, said he was delighted with the work that had gone into making the town a better and brighter place. Mr McMinn added that it was with a anticipation that the Council looked forward to the judges' results and building upon the work established in 2010. Date: August 25th 2010 |
