Dungannon Woman On Aid Trip To Haiti03/03/2010
A Dungannon woman is preparing to travel to Haiti to help with the aftermath of the earthquake. Heather Crawford, a local physiotherapist who works within NHS in South Tyrone Hospital, will join a medical team working in conjunction with an international organisation called OMS. OMS is a non denominational faith mission which has been established in Haiti since the late 1950s, having sites in both Port Au Prince and Cap Haitian. Said Heather; "I am going to Haiti to work as a Physiotherapist in the OMS medical centre in Cap Haitian, a city of about one million people but the population has swollen because many of the earthquake victims and those injured have been moved away from Port Au Prince since the disaster. "Everyone has witnessed the aftermath of the earthquake on television but the suffering is ongoing. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy indicated that there has been over 2000 limp amputations and this number is still growing because of failed fracture management." Heather is set to travel to Haiti in mid March, staying for around a month before her return just after Easter. Fundraising Ahead of the trip, a number of fund raising events have been organised which included a table quiz in Cookstown Hockey Club and a coffee morning in Ardboe Parish St Columb's Church Hall. Meanwhile, a Colour Me Beautiful evening will be held in Moyola Golf Club, Castledawson on Wednesday 3rd March at 7.30pm Source: Tyrone Courier |
