Tour of Castle Hill07/05/2008
It is only within the last few years that Castle Hill in Dungannon has been indentified among the wider audience as one of the most valuable historic sites in Ulster, indeed in the whole of Ireland. The recent archaeological findings and the subsequent publicity emanating from the work of the Channel 4 Time Team and the Archaeological Dept. of Queens University have helped to establish its status as a site of national significance. For over three hundred years, Castle Hill was the headquarters of the O'Neill's, traditional rulers of Ulster and former High Kings of Ireland. During the time of Hugh O'Neill, at the juncture of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it was the centre of Gaelic resistance against the armies of Queen Elizabeth. Subsequently the Plantation fort and town were founded on the ruins of O'Neill's castle and environs. The Society has organised a tour, led by Pat John Rafferty, of this historic site on Monday May 12 at 7.45pm. Patrons are requested to assemble at the top of Market Square, at Ranfurly House. All are welcome. Source: Tyrone Courier Back to News List
